The International Declaration on Youth Mental Health

On 2 October 2013 the International Declaration on Youth Mental Health was officially launched at the second International Youth Mental Health Conference in Brighton, England.

The launch represented a significant milestone for those involved in the youth mental health movement. It was the culmination of three years of work, with the Declaration was first proposed at a Youth Mental Health Summit in Killarney, Ireland in May 2010. The launch of the Declaration was also accompanied by a call to action. The message was simple: use the Declaration to leverage for investment and innovation to develop meaningful and responsive youth mental health services across the globe.

The Declaration sets out 11 measurable targets for the development of youth mental health services over the next 10 years. They are minimum service standards, and we must work together to ensure that these minimum standards are met.

You can play a part in the global movement of change. We urge you and your organisations to endorse the Declaration and to take action now. Action to achieve each target is possible at every level and clinicians, budget holders, service planners, policy makers and politicians all have a part to play in ensuring that the Declaration targets are met. Meeting these targets will mean that all young people and their families will be able to access high quality youth mental health services and to access the intervention and support they need when they need it.

Spread the word about the Declaration and your experiences of creating meaningful youth mental health services by using the #IAYMH hashtag.
